At IMPACT Martial Arts, we emphasize that a great training session starts before you throw your first punch. Let’s talk about the unsung heroes of injury prevention: warm-ups and cool-downs.

Warm-Up: Priming Your Body and Mind

Blood Flow & Flexibility

Gentle movements like jogging, jumping jacks, or dynamic stretches increase your heart rate, warm up your muscles, and improve joint mobility. A study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that dynamic warm-ups enhance performance and reduce injury risk (McCrary et al., 2015).

Mental Readiness

A well-structured warm-up helps you mentally shift into training mode—focused, alert, and prepared.

Cool-Down: Transition to Recovery

Heart Rate Regulation

Slowing things down after an intense workout helps your cardiovascular system return to normal.

Stretching & Mobility

Light stretching reduces muscle tension and can improve flexibility over time, aiding faster recovery and preventing stiffness.

Mindful Reflection

Use this time to review what you learned, acknowledge progress, and set goals for next time.
